While the division has allocated $1.1 million for the services, the contract is on a month-to-month basis and costs may not reach or exceed that figure. “We have critically examined the best way to serve the needs of all students and we feel this is a stop-gap measure to put us in position for 2021-22,” Keever said. Additionally, Keever said the division is considering building its white fleet - consisting of mini-vans, cars and mini-buses which will allow drivers to operate vehicles without the needed CDL license. While the division plans to utilize the company for additional resources, it will only be for a select number of students, specifically, those with disabilities and who are facing homelessness.Īccording to Keever, the division has identified about 80 to 90 students that participate in these specialized programs, some traveling as far as Newport News and Richmond.īy utilizing ALS Schools services, the division will be able to transport these students more efficiently. Through the $1.1 million contract with the company, the division will be able to utilize 14 additional drivers. The division has decided to move to alternative busing options which include contracting drivers through ALS Schools.
